36. Check out a Brewery (Idle Vine)
Lately the greater Austin, TX area seems to be giving birth to a new brewery almost every week! The craft beer movement is extremely popular in these parts, and if you’re visiting, a brewery or two should be on your ‘To Do’ list!
Recently, my pal Gus and I checked out Idle Vine Brewing Company. Idle Vine is a locally owned and operated craft brewery in Pflugerville, TX. The staff is friendly and welcoming…and very passionate about what they do! Here’s how they describe themselves on their website…
‘WE LIVE FOR THE CRAFT, OUR BREWING FAMILY, AND THE COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS US. CREATING WORLD CLASS BEER WITH A LOCAL MINDSET IS WHAT GETS US OUT OF BED EVERY MORNING. WE PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT BEER CAN BE, BECAUSE TO US IT IS MORE THAN JUST A DRINK. IT’S OUR ART, CULTURE, AND HISTORY. IT’S HOW WE CONVERSE, CONNECT, AND BUILD FAMILY. IT GIVES US A REASON TO EXPLORE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT’S A WAY OF LIFE. AT THE END OF THE DAY THE ONLY THING WE ANSWER TO IS THE QUALITY OF OUR CRAFT.’
We met Scott Ferguson, assistant brewer and self-titled ‘better beard grower’. Ferguson is a fellow Midwestern transplant. He came to Idle Vine from the great white north of Indiana. As his bio states, ‘He fell into the industry by accident and worked his way up in a couple different breweries. Many hours were spent cleaning kegs, fermenters, and anything else that needed cleaning along the way. After awhile he realized cold and snow are terrible so when a job opportunity at Idle Vine came up, he jumped on it. Ferguson brings passion, experience, creativity, a giant beard, and a love of metal with him. He loves making beer almost as much as he likes drinking it. And he really likes drinking it. Also he thinks Bio-Dome is one of the best movies ever.’ LOL okay.
The brewery and tap room are very roomy…since they are located inside a big warehouse. The staff keeps water bowls out in case you want to bring your dog in for a visit, which is excellent! Most importantly, Idle Vine has a healthy selection of year round brews on tap as well as seasonal specials, an ‘Explore’ menu for the more adventurous beer connoisseur, and, conveniently…six packs to go! If you’re not sure what to choose from the taproom menu, try a ‘Flight’ of 4 beer selections for $10.
The brewery hosts regular events like ‘Pub Trivia Night’, ‘Earn Your Brew’ Bootcamp, record release parties, and ‘Craft Yoga’ classes, and ‘Art By the Glass’ classes. They occasionally have food trucks as well…sadly not when I was there.
Gus is always a willing ‘guinea pig’ when it comes to trying out the different beer selections any brewery has to offer. He seems to like those thick, dark, coffee flavored brews the best. This time was no exception. Somehow, he still managed to finish all his beer selections anyway. What trooper! 😉
For the beer enthusiast in your life…
