26. Let’s Play a Game!
If there’s one thing I’ve noticed about people in the Austin, TX area, it’s that they like to have fun! There is literally something going on around these parts every single day/night of the year. Texans enjoy drinking beer, listening to live music, dancing, and playing games, indoors and out. Pretty much every bar has an outdoor area with bags, beer pong tables, etc. But, one of the most popular pastimes is pub games…namely Geeks Who Drink and Cards Against Humanity!
Before I moved here, I had never heard of either game, even though they are apparently played in bars (and households) all across the USA! Here in Austin, both Geeks and Cards are extremely popular! Cards Against Humanity even has it’s own Meetup group!
I have to digress for a second here and talk about Meetup.com…
Because the Austin area is such a fast growing melting pot of a place, the Meetup.com scene here is huge! I know I mention Meetup alot but they deserve it. I can honestly say that every single one of my best friends here in central Texas is my friend because of Meetup. If you’re new to an area and want to get to know folks with similar interests, I cannot stress enough what a Godsend they are! Shout Out to my Austin Chicago Sports Meetup (thanks Mike Fioretti) and my Ladies of Williamson County Meetup (thanks Mary Wright)!
Anyway, back to the topic at hand! So, I’ll let the Geeks Who Drink website explain exactly who/what they are…
“Geeks Who Drink is a homegrown Pub Trivia Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK. Our quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to wordplay to bad television. You can get a feel for the questions we ask by playing a sample round here. Each quiz has eight rounds of eight questions each. Play in teams of up to six or by yourself if you’re some kind of savant. If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway. We can usually get single players recruited onto an existing team. Winning teams gets street cred, bar cash, and other prizes depending on the venue. Bonus Questions for free pints are sprinkled throughout the quiz. You don’t have to be a trivia God to enjoy the quiz. Since you’re playing on a team, the collective knowledge base makes for more fun, less pressure. It’s not final friggin’ Jeopardy.”
I’ve played twice so far and I definitely agree that having six people is definitely an advantage. Each person really does add their own knowledge base and it can help your team ALOT since the categories are all over the place! It’s good, silly fun and it does get surprisingly competitive! By the way, it’s free to play and they host a game every single week at different venues around the area (and all over the country). So, just check their website to find a game near you! Here are some of my ladies from the ‘Big City Girls’ team a few weeks ago. We didn’t have the most clever team name (favorite one I heard that night was ‘Better Late Than Pregnant’) but we were in the lead all night long until the very last round! We very much enjoyed feeling smarter than everyone else in the room…at least for a little while. ;P
Now, on to my absolute Favorite Game of All Time…Cards Against Humanity! I am not even much of a ‘game’ person. But, some of my Sports Meetup pals here in Texas turned me on to this game at a party one night and I have been a fanatic ever since. All I remember from the first time I played is that I thought I was actually going to expire from laughing so hard!
The game itself is super simple. Each round, one player asks a question from a black card, and everyone else answers with their funniest white card. But, as their website states right out of the gate…‘Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people. Unlike most of the party games you’ve played before, Cards Against Humanity is as despicable and awkward as you and your friends.’ And they are not kidding! So, if you or the people you play games with are easily offended, Do Not Play This Game!
With that said, if you’re like me and you have a dark, dark sense of humor and are not easily shocked, then, by all means, Go For It! I promise-you will laugh your ass off! As a matter of fact, I just played it with a group of friends last night and we went on for about 5 hours! It’s highly addictive and it never gets boring. We always have to play until we’ve gone through every black card!
Cards is so popular that it actually has it’s very own Meetup group in Austin. So many people love the original game that the company has come out with tons of ‘expansion’ packs to keep things fresh. You can check them out right here…
I am about to buy the Trump expansion pack and absolutely cannot wait!! I am sure it will be tremendous! It will be the best expansion pack in the history of all expansion packs!
So, that’s all for now. Love to hear what you think of these games…if you’ve tried them… or if you plan to check them out now that you’ve learned about them here! Peace and Love.
