15. Visit the Dark Blue Refuge of Burger University…oh, and they have Amazing Food, too!
I kept meaning to stop into Burger University every time I passed it by. It sits right on the corner of the Georgetown Square at 7th Street and Austin Ave. The century old ‘Lockett Building’ has a fancy Victorian vibe with the heavy wood trim on the brick facade and the pretty dome accent on the roof. You might think that a place like that would seem stuffy and imposing. But, the huge windows and glass door beckon you inside anyway…and, once you’re there, you realize that, as the name suggests, ‘Burger U’ is anything but pretentious!
There are lots of things to love about this place but, for me, I think one of the best parts is the atmosphere. I’d never have thought that ‘Ivy League’ was really my style. But, the feel of the exterior architecture that I mentioned coupled with the deep blue walls and lots of dark wood trim everywhere inside is somehow very comforting to me. I’m originally from Chicago and the Texas heat is sometimes a bit overwhelming. So, I think that a place like this just feels like a cool refuge from that harsh climate.
Weird that I’m waxing on about the emotional appeal of the architecture of a burger joint, right? But, I really did feel good there and so I thought it was worth mentioning. I guess that’s the beauty of having your own blog. 😉
The ‘University’ theme is everywhere, from the cute ‘college-y’ names for the menu items to the staff themselves! I’d imagine alot of these folks attend Southwestern University, which is right in town. The young staff were very friendly and welcoming and I just liked this place right away…before even tasting the food…which, by the way, is Ridiculously Delicious!
I ordered a ‘Rival’ with peppers and cheddar cheese and my date had the ‘Exchange Student’ with Swiss cheese and ‘shrooms. We split a small order of fries and it was…wait for it…YUGE! Haha Sorry-I guess that’s currently my favorite ‘word’. ;P Anyway, if you don’t believe me, check out the pic…that pile of fries is ON POINT! They are fresh cut, too, and about the yummiest things I’ve ever tasted! Period. Hehe I’m on a roll today…forgive me! The burgers were ‘to die for’ as well and I washed my food down with a Vanilla Cream Soda, which I’ve never had before, but was so sweet and ‘vanilla-y’! It made me smile. For the grownups, they do have a healthy selection of beer as well…and a couple of vinos, too, as you can see below…
They also have a nice condiments bar with some extra sauces and salad fixins’ and they give military folks a 15% discount on their order. Another ‘fave’ about Burger U was that they were playing a GREAT selection of 70’s music the whole time we were there. Any time I hear ‘You Sexy Thing’ by Hot Chocolate, I know I’m in the right place!
The food is ‘off the hook’, the atmosphere is chill, and the price is right! So, all in all, what’s not to love? I can’t think of much. So, Burger University, I give you an A+ and a Gold Star! Keep up the good work!
