50 Things To Do in Greater Austin, TX #5 Painting with a Twist

5. Embrace Your Inner Artist at Painting with a Twist!

If you’ve never tried Painting with a Twist, I encourage you to give it a whirl! Friends had tried to get me to check it out several times in the past and I didn’t think it was for me. But, once I finally did it, I loved it! I have been twice now and I think I’m getting addicted. Not to mention-I think I am almost getting the hang of how to paint a tree!

img_1338Painting with a Twist is a franchise and they are located all over the country. But I have only been to the one near my house in Georgetown, TX and it is Adorable! The owners have turned a cute little yellow frame house on a quiet residential street into a lively and fun art studio with several classrooms and lovely paintings lining every single interior wall of the place. There is always music playing too. It’s pretty hard not to feel happy as soon as you walk in the door!

The staff have been great each time I’ve been here! They are young local artists and they do such a good job of making you feel relaxed and welcomed. They’ll greet you with a warm smile and help you get situated at your easel where everything is already laid out for you. The classes I’ve been to have been $35 each and they provide the canvas, paint, brushes to use, and an apron to wear. You do have to bring your own wine, though!

I usually don’t even drink when I go because I want to focus on getting a good painting out of the night. Okay, maybe I’m a teeny bit too serious sometimes…whatever! Anywhoo, the last time I was there, my friend Annette convinced me to have a glass of wine…she’s very persuasive! The wine helped me chillax and I think I got an even better painting because I wasn’t trying so hard. I guess there really is something to this whole ‘drink and paint’ idea after all! We all had a blast and it felt good to walk away with a really pretty piece of art at the end of the night! img_1340

The instructors are talented and approachable and they run the class at a really comfortable pace. Everyone paints the same thing and so you just kind of follow along with what they tell you to do. You really don’t have to think too much…which I like! It’s a perfect ‘cool down’ activity from a stressful day or week at work.

There are tv monitors on the wall so you can see what’s happening up close in case you are seated a little farther away from the front. The assistant walks around to check on folks and they are happy to give you individual help if you want it. The folks at PwaT somehow manage to pick pieces of artwork that are challenging but not overwhelmingly difficult to paint. It’s a good balance that makes you feel like you are actually learning something and stretching yourself while still being able to kick back, drink your wine or whatever, relax, and just enjoy yourself!

I like it when they give you a break (about halfway through the 2 hour class) so you can stretch your legs. I always go around and peek at everyone else’s work. It’s fascinating to see how many different interpretations there can be of the same subject…and how many budding artists are out there right under your nose!

img_1341My friends Gracie, Renee, Annette, and Vanessa went with me a few weeks ago and the whole gang had a great time! Some of their work is shown here in this post. Who knew you ladies were such artists??

Painting with a Twist really is a Genius idea…I wish I had thought of it! I, for one, really need the instructor to tell me what to paint and and how to do it. I was not blessed with my mom’s talent for turning a blank canvas into something beautiful all on my own. I need all the help I can get..and a little wine doesn’t hurt at all!

Another cool thing about the Georgetown PwaT is that when you go on their website, they have a calendar that shows which picture they’ll be working on each day for the whole month. It’s helpful when you’re planning a trip there. I like trees and nature pics, so I go on days when they are doing something like that. I also love blues and greens…which is how we ended up here on ‘Zen Tree’ night, of course!

One more thing I like about Painting with a Twist is that they care about doing good. This comes straight from the company website…’Because the company owners were both fundraisers in their previous positions, they have maintained that a core value of the company is to be an active member of the community and to focus on giving back. With this in mind, Painting with a Purpose was created. Painting with a Purpose is a monthly fundraising event held at all Painting with a Twist® locations as a centralized effort to raise funds that stay local in each market.’ Gotta like that!

Painting with a Twist is located at 1008 Rock St in Georgetown, TX 78626
