50 Things To Do in Greater Austin, TX #2 Texas Stars

Check out a Texas Stars hockey game!

If you read my ‘About Me’ page, you know that I’m a Chicago transplant to Texas and in Chicago, we are big on sports! Before I moved here, I was much more of a football girl than anything else. But, since I knew practically no one when I got here, I joined a Meetup Group (thank you Michael Fioretti of Austin Area Chicago Pro Sports Meetup!) so I could watch Bears games with other Chicago fans.

This group of people have become my absolute Besties in Texas and they like getting together to watch football and baseball. But most of all, they LOVE their hockey…probably because their Chicago Blackhawks are one of the best teams ever! #DYNASTY

We don’t have any pro teams here in the Austin area but, as far as hockey is concerned, we do have the Texas Stars! The AHL’s Texas Stars are the primary affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, playing all 38 of their home games at H-E-B Center at Cedaheb-centerr Park.

During their 7 year existence in the AHL, the Texas Stars won the 2014 Calder Cup, appeared in the 2010 Calder Cup Finals as Western Conference Champions, and have regularly moved players on to full-time careers in the NHL.

hockey-shirtI have been to several Stars games and I can tell you that a night out at a Stars hockey game is a great time for the whole family! Tickets are very affordable (starting at $13 each for a Thursday night game with regular specials running all the time…I even got a free ticket last year just by shopping at the HEB near my house) and the venue is a moderate size so you can see all the exciting action on the ice from any seat in the house!

Honestly, I’m not a ‘Yuge’ hockey fan. In fact, that picture on the left is of a tee shirt my friends Matt McKay and Marie Wittry got me for Christmas that they say is what I am like at a hockey game…and I can’t argue. You guys know me so well! But, the Texas Stars organization really knows how to appeal to hockey fans and people like me who are just tagging along for something to do.

There are several bars and tons of food vendors selling everything from flatbread pizzas to gourmet hot dog flights to ice cream. There are Giveaway Nights where you can get a Stars blanket, cloth shopping bag, or other cool gift just for showing up! Kids and grownups alike are kept busy between periods with fun music, games, and contests to win prizes. It’s fun to watch how ridiculous people will act for a free pizza or some chicken wings! Haha

One word of advice-Don’t  Forget Your Gloves! Even though we’re in Texas, things get pretty chilly inside a hockey arena. You’re welcome. 😉
